will focus primarily on readings from Colonial, Revolutionary, and Federalist
periods as well as appropriate later texts which serve as extensions of
these formative documents. We are interested in surveying the legacy of
the American Revolution and the evolution of moral, political, spiritual,
and aesthetic ideas in the new nation. Various conceptions of freedom
and democracy will be examined under the auspices of political charters
and speeches, autobiographies, moral doctrines, poetry, and fictions.
Charting the construction of an American national identity will help us
construct hypotheses to determine the legacy of literary traditions and
their inventions in the service of self-making and nationhood. |
